It’s a prediction system. Every second it processes signals from your senses, compares them to past experience, and decides what matters. It regulates breathing, heart rate, mood, memory, attention, and movement at the same time.

It never truly switches off. Even during sleep, it reorganizes information and restores balance.

The brain runs on electrical signals and chemical messengers. Neurons communicate through tiny bursts of electricity. Neurotransmitters carry messages across gaps between cells. When this communication is stable, you feel clear and focused. When it’s disrupted, you feel foggy, anxious, or low.

The Brain Is Energy-Hungry

Your brain makes up about two percent of your body weight but uses around twenty percent of your energy. That energy mostly comes from glucose, which is derived from carbohydrates.

But this doesn’t mean your brain wants constant sugar. It wants steady supply. Rapid spikes and crashes in blood sugar disrupt focus and mood. Stable energy supports stable thinking.

That’s why balanced meals matter more than quick snacks.

Fats Are Essential For Brain Structure

Your brain is made largely of fat. Cell membranes rely on fatty acids to stay flexible and functional. Omega-3 fatty acids, especially those found in fatty fish, play a key role in maintaining healthy neural communication.

When fat intake is too low or imbalanced, the structure of brain cells can suffer. This affects memory, mood, and long-term cognitive health.

Healthy fats support clarity. Poor fat balance contributes to mental fatigue.

Protein Feeds Neurotransmitters

Neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin are built from amino acids, which come from protein. Without enough protein, the brain struggles to produce the chemicals that regulate mood, motivation, and focus.

You don’t need extreme amounts. You need regular intake throughout the day. Eggs, fish, legumes, dairy, poultry, nuts. Consistency matters more than volume.

Mental stability is closely tied to chemical balance, and chemical balance depends on nutrition.

Micronutrients Quietly Influence Cognition

Vitamins and minerals play supporting roles that are easy to overlook. B vitamins help convert food into usable energy. Magnesium supports nerve function. Iron helps oxygen reach brain tissue. Zinc participates in neurotransmitter activity.

Deficiencies don’t cause dramatic collapse. They cause gradual decline. Slower thinking. Lower mood. Reduced concentration.

Small shortages add up.

Hydration Affects Focus Immediately

Even mild dehydration impacts attention and reaction time. The brain is highly sensitive to fluid balance. Headaches, brain fog, and irritability often trace back to low hydration rather than complex causes.

Water supports circulation and nutrient delivery. It’s simple but essential.

The Gut And Brain Are Connected

Your gut influences your brain more than you might expect. Gut bacteria help regulate inflammation and even influence neurotransmitter production. Diets rich in fiber, vegetables, fermented foods, and diverse nutrients support this system.

Highly processed foods and excessive sugar disrupt gut balance, which can indirectly affect mood and clarity.

Brain health isn’t isolated. It’s systemic.

Caffeine And Stimulants Aren’t Fuel

Caffeine doesn’t give energy. It blocks the feeling of fatigue temporarily. That’s useful in moderation, but it doesn’t replace sleep or nutrition.

Overreliance on stimulants often masks poor eating or poor rest. The brain eventually demands recovery.

The Brain Prefers Stability

Your brain thrives on rhythm. Regular meals. Consistent sleep. Balanced nutrients. Predictable hydration.

It doesn’t need superfoods. It needs reliability.

When nutrition supports steady energy, healthy fats, sufficient protein, and micronutrients, the brain functions with less friction. Focus sharpens. Mood steadies. Memory improves.

Your brain isn’t asking for extremes. It’s asking for balance.

In reality, it’s a set of small habits that shape how you feel every day. You don’t need a perfect routine or strict rules. You need consistency. When you take care of your body in simple ways, your mood lifts, your mind stabilizes and your energy lasts longer. A healthy lifestyle starts with intention, not pressure.

Your Body Needs Real Movement

Movement clears your head faster than any motivational quote. When you walk, stretch or train, your body wakes up. Your muscles loosen. Your breathing deepens. Feel more present in your own skin.

You don’t need a gym membership to stay healthy. You need regular motion. A twenty-minute walk. A few stretches between tasks. A short workout that gets your heart moving. These small choices add up.

Your body isn’t designed for long hours in one position. When you move daily, everything works better — energy, mood, digestion, sleep.

Food Shapes Your State More Than You Think

Healthy eating isn’t about restrictions. It’s about giving your body fuel instead of stress. Real food — vegetables, fruit, proteins, whole grains — keeps your mind steady and your blood sugar stable. You avoid the highs and crashes that make you tired and irritable.

On the other hand, processed snacks and sugar-heavy meals drain you. They taste good for a moment but leave you sluggish. When you eat with awareness, not impulse, your body responds immediately. Clearer skin. Better sleep. More stable energy.

You don’t need perfection. You need balance.

Rest Is the Foundation

Sleep isn’t optional. It resets your brain and heals your body. When you sleep well, everything gets easier — focus, emotions, immunity, even motivation. When you sleep poorly, the simplest tasks feel heavy.

That’s why a simple routine helps: dim lights before bed, no screens at night, a consistent sleep schedule, a calm environment. These small habits tell your brain it’s time to slow down.

Good sleep isn’t a reward. It’s maintenance.

Mental Health Is Part of the Equation

A healthy lifestyle includes your mind, not just your body. Stress builds quietly. It shows up in tension, irritability, low motivation or emotional exhaustion. When you take time to pause, breathe, talk, reflect or rest, your mental load decreases.

Simple practices help:
a few minutes of quiet
journaling
a short walk without your phone
saying “no” before you burn out

Mental clarity isn’t something you chase. It’s something you protect.

Hydration Makes Everything Work Better

Water sounds like basic advice, but it’s the foundation of everything your body does. When you’re hydrated, you think clearer and move easier. Your digestion improves. Your skin softens.

Even mild dehydration can make you feel tired, unfocused or anxious. A few glasses throughout the day change more than most people expect.

The Environment Around You Matters

Your habits depend on your surroundings. A cluttered space stresses you. A calm space grounds you. Foods within reach shape your choices. The people you spend time with influence your motivation.

A healthy lifestyle is easier when your environment supports it.
A clean kitchen encourages better meals.
A tidy bedroom helps you sleep.
A supportive friend helps you stay consistent.

When your space matches your goals, your life feels smoother.

Consistency Beats Perfection

A healthy lifestyle isn’t a challenge you start on Monday and abandon by Friday. It’s a rhythm. You don’t need flawless discipline. You need gentle, steady habits that you can keep on your busiest days.

Missing one workout doesn’t ruin anything. Eating one heavy meal doesn’t erase progress. What matters is what you do most of the time, not what you do once.

Small steps repeated daily build long-term change.

Living Healthy Means Feeling Alive

Healthy living isn’t about rules. It’s about feeling more like yourself. You move with ease. You wake up lighter. Think clearer.

When you focus on movement, balanced food, rest, mental clarity and hydration, your life shifts. Not dramatically. Gradually. Quietly. But the effect stays with you every single day.

For some, it’s about health. For others, it’s ethics or the environment. But beyond trends and labels, one question matters most: what does giving up meat actually do to your body?

The answer isn’t simple. Vegetarianism can make you feel light, energized, and focused — or tired, foggy, and nutrient-deficient. It all depends on how it’s done.

The Good Side: Lightness and Longevity

When done right, a vegetarian diet can do wonders. Plants are packed with fiber, antioxidants, and natural compounds that protect against disease.

Research shows vegetarians tend to have lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and a lower risk of heart disease. The absence of red and processed meats reduces inflammation, while the abundance of vegetables, legumes, and grains supports digestion and gut health.

You feel lighter because your body spends less energy on digestion and more on repair. Skin often clears up, energy stabilizes, and your immune system gets a boost from constant vitamin and mineral intake.

It’s not magic — it’s metabolism working smoothly.

The Other Side: The Nutrient Gap

But cutting out meat comes with trade-offs.
Meat isn’t just protein — it’s a dense source of iron, zinc, vitamin B12, and omega-3 fatty acids. Those are nutrients plants simply don’t offer in the same form or concentration.

Iron from plants (non-heme iron) absorbs less efficiently, meaning even if you eat plenty of spinach or beans, your body may still struggle to get enough. The same goes for vitamin B12 — crucial for energy, nerves, and blood cells. It’s found naturally only in animal products.

That’s why long-term vegetarians often need supplements or fortified foods. It’s not failure; it’s balance.

Even protein, the easiest nutrient to replace, can become tricky. Lentils, tofu, and quinoa are great — but you have to plan your meals to get the right mix of amino acids your body can’t make on its own.

The Psychological Side of the Plate

Food isn’t just fuel — it’s identity, culture, comfort. Going vegetarian can feel freeing or frustrating, depending on your mindset.

Some people find joy in discovering new recipes and ingredients. Others miss the simplicity of old habits. Socially, it can be awkward too — dinners out, family holidays, even dating can suddenly involve explaining your choices.

That emotional side often determines whether someone sticks with it or burns out.

The healthiest vegetarians aren’t the strictest — they’re the most mindful. They know why they’re doing it and how to make it work long-term.

The Middle Ground: Flexibility Wins

You don’t have to go all or nothing. Many nutritionists now recommend “flexitarian” eating — mostly plant-based, but with occasional fish, eggs, or meat for balance.

This approach offers the benefits of vegetarianism without the risk of deficiencies. It also keeps food enjoyable — which matters more for consistency than any diet rule ever will.

Health isn’t about perfection; it’s about sustainability.

The Bottom Line

Vegetarianism isn’t automatically healthy — it’s intentional.
Done carelessly, it can lead to fatigue and nutrient loss. Done thoughtfully, it can extend your life, sharpen your mind, and strengthen your heart.

The trick is to replace, not just remove.
Protein for protein. Iron for iron. Energy for energy.

In the end, food is personal. Whether you choose meat, plants, or something in between, your body will always tell you what works — if you’re willing to listen.

Because true wellness isn’t about restriction. It’s about awareness.

Is it luck, genetics, lifestyle, or something else entirely? While there’s no single formula for longevity, science has uncovered patterns that show it’s not just about reaching old age — it’s about how we get there.

Let’s explore the real drivers behind a long, vibrant life.

It’s Not Just About Genes

Genetics do play a role in longevity — but less than most people think. Studies on identical twins and long-lived populations suggest that only 20–30% of lifespan is linked to inherited traits. That means the majority is shaped by environment, habits, and behavior.

If your family has a history of long life, you may have an advantage. But genes alone don’t determine your fate. What you do with your body and mind matters more.

Lifestyle Choices Shape the Outcome

Long-living populations — like those in the Blue Zones (Okinawa, Sardinia, Nicoya, Ikaria, and Loma Linda) — share surprisingly similar habits. They don’t necessarily follow trendy diets or do intense workouts. Instead, they live with balance.

They move naturally throughout the day, eat mostly whole plant-based foods, sleep well, and stay socially active. They also live with a sense of purpose — a reason to wake up every day and stay connected to life.

These aren’t crash-course health programs. They’re lifestyles built over decades.

Stress: The Silent Agitator

Chronic stress has a measurable impact on longevity. It wears down your immune system, disrupts hormones, damages cardiovascular health, and even affects brain aging. But it’s not about eliminating stress completely — that’s impossible. It’s about how you manage it.

Long-lived individuals often have strong support systems, spiritual or community practices, and healthy coping tools. The mind-body connection plays a huge role in how our bodies age.

Social Connection and Emotional Health

One of the most surprising predictors of long life is human connection. People with strong relationships — family, friends, or community ties — tend to live longer, with lower risks of cognitive decline and depression.

Loneliness, on the other hand, has been linked to shorter lifespan and greater risk of chronic illness. Emotional well-being is more than just a nice-to-have. It’s a pillar of long-term health.

Small Habits with Big Impact

You don’t need to move to a remote island to live longer. Simple, consistent habits make a difference:

Eating real food, mostly plants

Moving daily — walking, gardening, stretching

Prioritizing rest and recovery

Staying curious, learning, and engaged in life

Spending time with people who make you feel seen and supported

There’s no secret. Just daily choices that add up over time.

Final Thought

Longevity isn’t about chasing youth — it’s about building a life that feels worth living, year after year. While we can’t control every factor, we can shape our health, mindset, and environment in powerful ways.

A long life isn’t promised, but the quality of your days? That’s something you can influence — starting right now.

It’s not just about what’s on your plate; it’s about what it represents. Is it fuel, a reward, a guilty pleasure, or a path to wellness? For many Americans, food is tied to identity, culture, and even morality. While some philosophies around eating and health are backed by science, others are riddled with myths and marketing traps. Let’s dive into the American mindset about food and health, uncover what’s worth believing, and call out what deserves a closer look.

The Obsession with Diets and “Clean Eating”

If there’s one thing Americans love, it’s a diet trend. Keto, paleo, intermittent fasting, plant-based—the list goes on. These diets promise everything from weight loss to improved mental clarity. But why are people so drawn to them?

Part of the appeal lies in control. With endless food options and busy lifestyles, having clear rules can simplify decisions. “Eat this, not that” feels manageable, even comforting. The problem? Many diets oversimplify or demonize entire food groups. Keto tells you carbs are the enemy, while low-fat diets make you fear avocados. Both approaches miss the bigger picture: balance.

Even “clean eating,” which started as a push toward whole, unprocessed foods, has morphed into an almost moral judgment of food choices. Labels like “good” and “bad” turn eating into a game of guilt rather than nourishment. While eating fresh, whole foods is important, obsessing over every ingredient can lead to orthorexia, an unhealthy fixation on “pure” eating.

The Rise of Functional Foods

Another big trend? Functional foods. These are foods marketed as having added health benefits, like fortified cereals, kombucha for gut health, or turmeric lattes for inflammation. Americans are increasingly drawn to the idea that food can act as medicine—a belief rooted in the desire for natural solutions over pharmaceuticals.

While functional foods often do have real benefits, the science doesn’t always match the hype. For example, probiotics in yogurt can support gut health, but not all probiotic products contain strains that survive digestion. Similarly, sprinkling turmeric on your soup won’t magically cure joint pain unless paired with other lifestyle changes.

The takeaway? Functional foods can be part of a healthy diet, but they’re not a cure-all. It’s about consistency and context, not magical “superfoods.”

The Fast Food Dilemma

Despite the push for healthier lifestyles, America’s love affair with fast food is alive and well. Burgers, fries, and sugary drinks remain staples in many diets. Fast food is convenient, affordable, and engineered to taste amazing. But it’s also packed with calories, sugar, and unhealthy fats, which contribute to rising rates of obesity and chronic illnesses.

What’s interesting is how fast food chains are evolving. Many now offer “healthier” options like salads, grilled chicken, and plant-based burgers. While this shift is promising, it’s worth reading the fine print. A “healthy” salad can pack as many calories as a cheeseburger once you add the dressing.

The lesson? Fast food isn’t off-limits, but it pays to be mindful. Look at the menu critically and avoid assuming the healthiest-sounding option is actually good for you.

Exercise and Food: The American Balancing Act

Another cornerstone of the American philosophy on health is the relationship between food and exercise. Many people view exercise as a way to “earn” their food or undo the damage of indulgence. The idea of “working off” a big meal can create an unhealthy cycle of guilt and overexertion.

The truth is, exercise and food should complement each other, not compete. Exercise isn’t punishment for eating; it’s a tool for building strength, improving mood, and supporting overall health. And while food fuels your workouts, it’s also a source of pleasure and connection. Finding this balance is key to sustainable health.

Beware of Marketing Traps

Food marketing in America is a multi-billion-dollar industry, and it’s designed to play on your emotions. Labels like “organic,” “gluten-free,” and “no added sugar” can make products seem healthier than they actually are. But these buzzwords don’t always tell the whole story.

For example, gluten-free snacks often contain more sugar and fat than their gluten-containing counterparts. And “no added sugar” doesn’t mean the product is sugar-free; it might just be packed with natural sweeteners like fruit juice concentrate. The key is reading labels and understanding what they really mean.

The Philosophy You Should Embrace

So, what’s the healthiest mindset when it comes to food? It’s all about balance and mindfulness. Instead of jumping on the latest diet bandwagon or obsessing over every calorie, focus on:

Eating whole, minimally processed foods most of the time.

Allowing yourself to enjoy treats without guilt.

Listening to your body’s hunger and fullness cues.

Avoiding extremes, whether it’s cutting out entire food groups or overloading on superfoods.

Wrapping It Up: Food Is Personal

At the end of the day, food is deeply personal. It’s tied to culture, emotions, and individual health needs. While it’s great to strive for better eating habits, it’s equally important to approach food with flexibility and self-compassion.

Americans might have some quirky philosophies around food and health, but there’s wisdom to be found in the balance. Eat to nourish your body, but don’t forget to enjoy the experience. Because when it comes down to it, a happy relationship with food is one of the healthiest choices you can make.

It’s hard to believe, but a lot of people who are severely depressed and desperate don’t even know they have a problem.

Unfortunately, these people do not even realize the burden of all the negativity and unpleasant emotions that are constantly swirling in their heads.

However, depression is a very real problem. This is now faced by many therapists and psychologists, whose main task is to recognize the symptoms that accompany depression.

Muscle aches, mood swings, anger, self-loathing, abrupt behavior changes, and contempt for everything around you are all signs of depression.

People often hide their true emotions, forget about sadness, try to hide stress behind anxiety, and justify excessive nervousness with psychosomatic changes in the body.

You may be surprised by this fact, but latent depression does happen. There are also a huge number of people who are unaware of their severe depression and ignore the problem.

How to recognize a depressed state?

Over time, depressed people become helpless and embarrassed.

Note that there is not always a clear and objective impulse for depression, such as the loss of a loved one, a difficult separation from the other half, or an unforeseen dismissal.

The main problem is that usually, people in a state of great depression at first glance seem absolutely successful and happy people.

In fact, it is a fairly typical situation in which feelings of dissatisfaction, emotional lethargy, and helplessness become an integral part of our lives.

People who suffer from this type of depression, sooner or later notice that they have stopped doing what used to bring them incredible pleasure. And the reason for giving up favorite hobbies can be a large number of important commitments.

These people begin to perceive everything that happens to them so normally that they gradually get used to their depressed state and learn to live with it.

This is the essence of the problem.

Most symptoms have nothing to do with depression

When depressed people experience complete exhaustion, they finally dare to visit a doctor, but not a psychologist, but a therapist.

Usually in such situations, the doctor immediately prescribes a blood test. After receiving the test results, most doctors recommend more rest, regular intake of vitamins, and proper nutrition.

After a few months, the person returns to the doctor, but this time due to severe back pain. This time you may be advised to visit a traumatologist, physiotherapist, or masseur.

However, when you need to be examined again, you will already complain of insomnia and excessive nervousness. After such complaints, doctors usually prescribe benzodiazepines (sleeping pills).

And finally, trying to stop using psychotropic substances and get rid of addiction to sleeping pills, on the advice of a doctor you will be forced to visit a psychiatrist. It is this specialist who will give you the final diagnosis: depression.

On average, people spend 1-2 years to get the final correct diagnosis. Until then, they may not even suspect what is really happening to them.

Believe me, depression is a much more serious problem than it may seem at first glance.

Stage of denial of the problem

You should not be afraid of the word “depression”. Unfortunately, this term usually causes a strong feeling of disapproval and contempt both from the environment and from the patient himself.

We still live in a world where there is this thought: “Depressed people are miserable. Depression is a common weakness and inability to solve everyday problems”.

Such statements are false. Depression in any form is a disease that requires a comprehensive approach to treatment. Usually, patients with depression have prescribed a set of medications, psychological assistance, and group classes.

Unfortunately, when a person is diagnosed with depression, he feels as if the whole world around him has stopped, and everything is not going according to plan.

Depressed people are not always ready to fight their inner demons, losses, and a broken heart. They delay the release of the brain from obsessive thoughts and negative emotions for as long as possible.

Instead, they try to continue living a normal life just to stay afloat.

Dealing with depression is not always easy. However, one day you will feel that it can not continue, and still dare to overcome depression.

Psychologists identify several key points that help them make the correct diagnosis when they are approached by a depressed person.

Here are some basic signs of depression:

Insomnia;

Apathy;

Constant mood swings;

Insecurity and the feeling that any of your actions are doomed to failure.

Due to the busy lifestyle that people now lead in developed countries, sleep disorders are quite common. This is why many people are forced to take hypnotic or sleeping pills to fall asleep.

Also known as hypnotic drugs, sleeping pills are now wildly popular. However, you need to be incredibly careful and not to abuse such remedies, because they can negatively affect your well-being.

What is insomnia?

The most common disease in developed countries is sleep disturbance, which is characterized by the inability of a patient to fall asleep or sleep soundly all night to get enough rest to regain energy and wake up full of energy.

Numerous studies on sleep disorders show that the cause of it should be sought in other internal diseases instead of perceiving insomnia as an independent disease. It is very important to remember this because first of all, you need to look for ways to combat the disease that provokes insomnia.

It should be noted that the types of insomnia can be classified according to their duration and nature:

Transient insomnia. This insomnia lasts less than 7 days, and it usually bothers some women in the premenstrual period.

Sharp insomnia. This type of insomnia bothers a person for a period of one to three weeks.

Chronic insomnia. Insomnia can be called chronic if a person suffers from this sleep disorder for more than three weeks.

According to the nature of the disorder, insomnia can be classified as follows:

Problems with falling asleep. This disorder indicates that it is difficult for a person to fall asleep.

Problems with maintaining sleep. It is difficult for the patient to sleep soundly throughout the night.

Premature waking up in the morning.

General insomnia.

Hypnotic drugs or sleeping pills to improve sleep quality

These drugs are considered psychoactive psychotropic substances that facilitate the process of falling asleep, causing a person to feel drowsy.

Note that there are six basic linear treatments for insomnia

Your doctor should start with the first method and move on to the next if the first method did not give the desired results.

1. Natural remedies

People often use natural remedies to combat insomnia. The most popular are valerian, linden, passionflower, and opioids. At the same time, some patients choose other therapies, including homeopathy and natural remedies.

2. Non-Benzodiazepine hypnotics pills

These types of sleeping pills are selective agonists of GABA receptors. It should be noted that GABA receptors are mostly inhibitory neurotransmitters of the central nervous system.

These pills have shown quite positive results among consumers due to their high efficiency. Also, most people tolerate the above pills quite well.

That is why these pills are prescribed in the first place, especially if the patient needs to overcome sharp insomnia. At the same time, it should be noted that these pills are not suitable for the treatment of chronic insomnia.

3. Benzodiazepine sleeping pills

The second most popular pill for insomnia is benzodiazepines. Unlike previous drugs, these drugs do not belong to the complex of selective GABA receptors.

It should be noted that benzodiazepines have succeeded in replacing other pills (including barbiturates), which were previously most often used as hypnotics.

Remember that despite their high efficiency, they have the ability to change the natural structure of sleep, affect the phase of fast sleep and lead to negative side effects, they are highly addictive.

That is why before prescribing it is necessary to inform the patient about the possible negative consequences and monitor the person’s condition while taking these sleeping pills.

4. Antidepressants that help you fall asleep quickly

As with benzodiazepines, these drugs also interrupt the fast sleep phase. However, it should be noted that they have a slightly different mechanism of action. Such remedies have a calming effect on the body due to their anticholinergic properties. Also, they have the ability to improve the aminergic activity of neurotransmitters.

It should be noted that if a patient suffers from chronic insomnia, benzodiazepines are often insufficient. That is why patients should use these drugs only as adjunctive therapy.

5. Antipsychotic drugs for the treatment of insomnia

These medications are more commonly prescribed to the elderly who suffer from delirium, mania, insomnia, and mental disorders.

6. Melatonin or Gabapentin

These medications are usually used to treat sleep disorders caused by Jet Lag, also called desynchronosis and flight fatigue is a temporary disorder that causes fatigue, insomnia, and other symptoms as a result of air travel across multiple time zones.

It is considered a circadian rhythm sleep disorder, which is a disruption of the internal circadian clock.

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, restaurants and cafes are quarantined. Food delivery services operate in an emergency mode, but some people have lost their jobs or have faced cuts in salaries, so they cannot afford to use their services. The way out is to cook at home. The United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF has published useful nutrition tips for the coronavirus epidemic.

How to handle grocery store products during a pandemic

There is currently no official evidence that food or product packaging may be related to the transmission of COVID-19. But there is a chance that a person will become infected if he touches the surface with a virus, and then touches his face. Follow simple rules:

Returning from the store, scrub your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds.

Remove the food from the packaging and throw it into the bin with a lid.

Wash fruits and vegetables under cold running water without chemicals.

Before opening or refrigerating a tin can, wipe it with a disinfectant.

Wash your hands again or use an alcohol wipe.

How to cook safely in an epidemic

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap before cooking.

Use separate cutting boards for raw meat and fish. Refrain from incomplete cooking.

Try to throw away food waste and packaging as quickly as possible, avoiding

the accumulation of garbage.

Always use clean dishes and cutlery.

How to breastfeed during a virus outbreak

Women with COVID-19 can continue to breastfeed if they want to, this — studies have shown that this will not harm the baby. However, you need to strictly observe hygiene during feeding: put on a mask, wash your hands before and after touching the baby, regularly disinfect all surfaces to which the virus carrier touches. If mom feels too bad, you can express milk or transfer the baby to the mixture.

If you experience anger, irritability, powerlessness, apathy — this is absolutely normal.

What exactly affects health

As scientists have found out, the need even for a while to abandon social contacts and freedom of movement seriously affects health and psyche.

1. Lack of familiar communication

Studies show that people with weaker social connections die from any causes 50% more often than their sociable peers. This effect is comparable to the effects of rampant smoking.

Loneliness is as destructive as 15 cigarettes a day.

It is clear that this effect is cumulative and for several weeks without the usual social connections will not cause you serious damage. However, loneliness is combined with other negative factors.

2. A sharp decrease in physical activity

It doesn’t matter if you lost your usual pool or gym in the evenings or simply switched to remote work from home — forced inactivity will quickly prove itself. For example, most likely, you will begin to gain weight if you do not limit your diet. But this is not the most unpleasant consequences.

Lack of physical activity today is considered the main cause of the development of chronic diseases — from obesity and diabetes to problems with the heart and blood vessels, accelerated aging and even cancer.

Moreover, the negative effect arises very quickly.

Just two weeks of inactivity is enough to begin to decrease insulin sensitivity, decreased muscle mass and worsened the state of the cardiovascular system.

In addition, physical activity is closely related to psychology. The less we move, the more it makes us miserable and lethargic. The place of cheerfulness is occupied by sadness, irritation, disappointment, anger, and other unpleasant emotions.

This is especially evident in those who regularly went in for sports and forced to leave training in an instant.

3. Accumulating stress

Changing your lifestyle is always a shock. Even if you just had to change office to remote work. If at the same time you have lost your income or have to worry not only about yourself, but also about the health of elderly relatives or, in parallel with your job responsibilities, try on the functions of a cook, housekeeper, and school teacher, stress builds up day after day and intensifies.

In February 2020, The Lancet magazine published a large review of scientific papers that examined the psychological effects of quarantines during outbreaks of various diseases in the past. The verdict of scientists is short: an unusual and protracted emotional load in conditions of self-isolation can lead to mental exhaustion.

Its symptoms are confusion, anxiety, irritability, insomnia, bad mood, anger. In some cases, it comes to symptoms of depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

A side effect of mental exhaustion is the increase in the number of stains after quarantine ends.

Researchers emphasize that those who have or have had mental health problems are most affected by the need to sit locked up. Such people should be especially careful about themselves and their own health.

Do you need to disinfect the packaging and how safe are reusable bags?

Don Schaffner, a food microbiologist at Rutgers University, posted a thread on Twitter about buying and processing food during a pandemic. He noted that more and more information from incompetent sources is now appearing on the Web, and different advice can not only raise panic but also hurt. In his opinion, the most dangerous thing is recommendations from doctors who have nothing to do with microbiology and food.

“I am a food microbiologist. Would you like to hear from me tips on how to treat children? Unlikely. And that is why you should not listen to advice on food hygiene or microbiology from doctors who are completely unaware in this area.”

First of all, he told whether purchases should be disinfected: “Is it worth disinfecting the packaging of products? I do not think that this has any scientific justification. It is better to wash your hands if you took something from a potentially infected package — and this rule does not work only during a pandemic. Always wash your hands and/or treat them with an antiseptic before eating. ”

He further explained how to wash fruits and vegetables — and there is absolutely nothing complicated.

Wash fruits and vegetables with cold water, soap can not be used for this.

There is no evidence that specialized fruit and vegetable cleansers somehow affect SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of COVID-19. Most of them are not more effective than ordinary water. Nevertheless, if you feel better about it and you don’t mind spending a few dollars, you can use such funds.

Similarly, there is no evidence that washing with vinegar helps kill more bacteria than washing with water. Better leave the vinegar to cook.

Schaffner also told how to procure to minimize risk.

Treat your hands with an antiseptic before entering the supermarket and after you leave it. Large stores now hang antiseptic dispensers at the entrance — feel free to use them.

Try to spend as little time as possible in the store and do not contact other people. Make a shopping list and go to a familiar store where you are well oriented so as not to waste time looking for the right department.

Reusable bags, shoppers or string bags can be used, but do not forget to wash them regularly. However, this rule also works outside the pandemic. When you get the groceries, it’s better to store such bags in the trunk of a car.

Individual, even very negative, emotions do not become causes of disease. But if there is too much psychological stress and it lasts a long time, then the body signals this. People begin to get tired more, sleep less, gain or lose weight, remember information worse, diarrhea or constipation, headache, problems in sexual life can occur.

Stress also exacerbates acne (but does not provoke it). The reason for such signals may be a new job or dismissal, divorce, loss of a loved one, moving and other changes in life.

But what about psychosomatics

Psychosomatics (or psychosomatic disorder) is another. This is the name of a large group of disorders that usually begin against a background of stress, and not because of a certain type of emotion.

And no one knows the exact cause of such disorders. There are some factors – genetic (family history of the disease) and psychosocial, which may be associated with the development of somatic symptoms, but their effect has not yet been adequately studied.

More specifically, how does psychosomatics manifest

Often a person experiences pain. The stomach, back, joints, arms or legs can be sick, there can be a chest pain. Sometimes there is weakness, shortness of breath, palpitations, nausea, vomiting, general malaise, and other symptoms.

At the same time, standard treatment does not help, doctors consistently exclude one diagnosis after another. This may be an occasion to suspect a somatized disorder, which is usually referred to as “psychosomatics”.

What else can stress lead to

Usually short-term stress does not interfere with the body. When a person is nervous, pressure can increase, but there is no evidence yet that this leads to long-term health problems.

True, do not forget that chronic stress often leads to an unhealthy lifestyle – a person begins to overeat, smoke or abuse alcohol.

And this behavior contributes to the development of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer. In addition, stress is a risk factor for depression.

It happens that emotional trauma along with physical stressors – such as infections and a genetic predisposition – can cause or affect the severity of the symptoms of some diseases. It is believed that this, for example, occurs with functional dyspepsia, which is often confused with chronic gastritis, and with irritable bowel syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome – is this when a person often wants to use the toilet?
Or, conversely, less often than usual. With irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a person feels cramping, abdominal pain, and stool becomes irregular, its consistency changes. There may also be flatulence, bloating and belching. Symptoms occur at least once a week, and this continues for at least three months. IBS is not a dangerous disease. It does not affect life expectancy and does not increase the risk of other health problems, however, symptoms of IBS can be very unpleasant, cause anxiety and create awkward moments.

What to do with stress

Sometimes good sleep, physical activity, a varied diet, and relaxation from the news help to cope with stress, if a person is worried about them.

If all else fails, you can’t cope with stress on your own and this greatly interferes with life – there is a reason to consult a general practitioner or general practitioner and think about psychotherapy. For example, using cognitive-behavioral therapy, you can learn skills that will help you manage stress and control your emotional state.

The prerequisites for the development of these diseases are most often unhealthy habits and improper lifestyle. However, there are simple rules, following which will help protect the heart and maintain its health.

Attention to symptoms and regular checkups

Every day in the world 400 people die from a cardiovascular attack. In contrast to the belief that until recently, the deaths for this reason mainly concern men (smokers who are overweight, have little movement), more than half of them are victims of women of all ages. Experts explain this increase in female mortality from cardiovascular diseases by the high rate of life, stress and other factors that do not distinguish the existence of a modern woman from men. Therefore, knowing how to protect the heart is important for both genders.
In addition to external factors that negatively affect the cardiovascular system, there are also internal factors: hereditary predisposition, diabetes, arterial hypertension, and elevated cholesterol. The presence of these factors requires regular examinations of the state of the heart and blood vessels. A home form of control should be a daily measurement of blood pressure, and in diabetes – regular monitoring of sugar levels.
Careful attention to the disruption of the heart. The following symptoms should be alarming:

Severe pain in the chest (both during exercise and at rest), lasting more than 10 minutes.

Pain extending to the neck, shoulders and upper back.

Sudden causeless severe fatigue.

Abdominal discomfort, heartburn, nausea, vomiting.

Vertigo, panic condition.

These symptoms indicate serious problems and the need for urgent medical care.
Proper nutrition: a diet for the heart

Proper nutrition is one of the fundamental factors for maintaining health, including heart health. Its principles are well known: food must be complete, balanced, eliminating harmful products. Cardiologists consider the diet of the Mediterranean countries to be the most suitable for the heart and blood vessels, where the death rate from heart attack is much lower than in other regions of the world.

This diet suggests:

Consumption of large quantities of fresh vegetables and fruits, fish, olive oil and oilseeds, whole grains.

Moderate consumption of cheese, red meat and wine.

Restriction in the diet of butter, sour cream, fatty cheese, sausages, pastry and sweets.

The ban on industrial foods due to their oversaturation with salt, sugar and fat, as well as due to the presence in their composition of various additives.

Eating chocolate is good for the heart, but only in the amount of one or two squares per day. It is better to choose dark chocolate with a high content of cocoa, since it is this product that has substances that are beneficial to the cardiovascular system.

Physical exercise and sports

The heart is a muscle, therefore, like other muscles, it needs training. The more trained the heart, the better it works. Sedentary lifestyle is not helpful to this body. At the same time, extreme efforts, too much physical exertion can also be harmful. Moderate intensity corresponding to age and the regularity of physical exercises are two main rules for practicing how to maintain the normal functioning of the cardiovascular system.

The most useful form of training is walking. Experts have found that just three hours a week of fast walking increases the productivity of the heart by 12%. It is better to devote such walks by the hour three times a week or 30 minutes every day. Benefit will be brought also by such kinds of physical activity, as Nordic walking, jogging, swimming, fitness, cycling. Increase the intensity of training is necessary gradually, carefully considering the reactions of the body. Indispensable conditions for sports should be the absence of unpleasant symptoms (muscle pain, shortness of breath, etc.), well-being and enjoyment.

Healthy sleep and lack of stress

Lack of sleep and stress provoke irregularities in the work of the heart and blood vessels, increasing the risk of heart attacks. An adult needs seven to eight hours of night rest. If for some reason this rule is violated, then it would be correct to lie down for 15-20 minutes during the day. A short siesta, however, is also useful for those whose night rest is not disturbed. Daytime sleep restores strength, reduces the level of stress hormones and protects against cardiovascular diseases.

The lack of a full night’s sleep is one of the causes of stress, which in turn is considered one of the main risk factors for heart attacks and strokes. In the course of research, American scientists found out that the cardiovascular system of a person in constant stress experiences the same negative effect as smoking 5 cigarettes a day. Therefore, prolonged stress or a strong sudden shock of 27% increase the risk of heart attack.

There are many recommendations for dealing with stress. Here are some of them:

Physical activity is an effective means of relieving stress. Movement and stress contribute to the development of substances in the body that elevate mood and reduce stress. For this purpose, both occupations in the gym or in the open air, as well as any homework or walks are useful.

Another great remedy for stress is a hobby. Favorite activity can distract from evil thoughts, calm, relieve tension and lift your mood.

Communication with nature, pets and nice people will help in the fight against stress. Those who cause negative emotions should be avoided.

The everyday stress of everyday work or difficult relationships can take off a bright event (travel, party, meeting with friends, going to a concert or a football match).

It is possible to get rid of long-term stress by carefully analyzing the causes that cause it, and trying to eliminate them: to give up something, change something in your behavior or attitude towards the surrounding reality, organize your life differently, make it calmer and measured.
