So What Does 4:20 Mean, Anyway?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard the term, “4:20,” before. Often dubbed as the “time to smoke out,” the term got its start in 1971 in a California high school. Some students that enjoyed smoking marijuana would gather around a statue of Louis Pasteur at 4:20 in the afternoon and get high. The term spread like wildfire and now it’s pretty much common knowledge.

Even though the term first surfaced in the seventies, it’s still in use. It was predominately used as a way for teens to blatantly talk about pot smoking in front of adults. However, most adults now know this term, so it’s not exactly the best covert code. Likewise, many of the myths about the moniker are just that. 420 isn’t a police code or anything like that.

Even though 420 has been embraced by the pot smoking community, it’s also used by people who use vaporizers and enjoy smoking other materials. Nowadays, people use vaporizers when they want to enjoy their favorite material. Some people still smoke, but vapor is much less hazardous to your health and offers a cleaner, purer experience.

You don’t get the tar and other carcinogens that are contained in cigarettes when you inhale vapor. It’s essentially just steam, so the only real hazard is burning yourself. And even that can be greatly avoided when you use high quality vaporizers with built in temperature controls. All you have to do is set the temperature and enjoy. It’ll automatically shut off once the material has reached your desired heat level.

Though many people may not associate vapor with the 420 culture, it’s very much a part of it. People of all ages enjoy vapor for a variety of reasons, not just the limited uses of the original 420 culture. In fact, vaporizers can even be used to treat medical conditions like upper respiratory infections and allergies. It can be a good way to enjoy aromatherapy herbs as well like lavender and eucalyptus. Truly, it just depends on what you want to use it for. Vapor can provide you with a speedy solution.

So whether you think of 420 as a time to smoke out or just a fun cultural reference, know this: the initial concept has expanded far beyond that original group of teens in the 1970’s. People that enjoy smoking and using vaporizers are a part of the club and included in this very interesting sub-culture.
